Akanksha Misra received her Ph.D. in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies from the University of Washington in 2020. Her doctoral dissertation research explored the creation of gendered and sexual citizenship through bodies of teachers and children in schools in India and Turkey.

Oscar Aguirre-Mandujano studies early modern Ottoman intellectual history, and its connections to literature, poetry, and bureaucracy.

Melinda Cohoon researches Iranian and Iranian-American gamers using virtual ethnographic methods.

Michael Degerald uses the tools of an historian but regularly draws on elements of political science, geography, and social theory. His dissertation research explores Iraqi state discourse in the 1970s and 1980s, but he is very interested in the history of the modern Middle East more broadly.

K. Mehmet Kentel is an urban and environmental historian of late Ottoman Istanbul, and the Research Projects Manager at Istanbul Research Institute.

Ayda's research interests center around forced migration studies, critical humanitarian studies, and anthropology of religion. Ayda has currently finalized her field research in Gaziantep, Turkey.

In her second book, Bet-Shlimon studies how colonized people articulate their aspirations for liberation in places where imperial relationships at different scales overlap and intertwine.

Christopher Tounsel (Associate Professor, History, and Director, African Sudies Program) is an historian of modern Sudan, with special focus on race and religion as political technologies.
