I am a historian of modern South Asia, the Soviet Union and the global Cold War. My dissertation examines how the Soviet Union sought to win over “hearts and minds” in the decolonizing world during the Cold War through foreign-language print publishing initiatives.

I am a cultural anthropologist who works across the fields of multispecies ethnography, environmental anthropology, the anthropology of religion, South Asian Studies, and political anthropology.
Akanksha Misra received her Ph.D. in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies from the University of Washington in 2020. Her doctoral dissertation research explored the creation of gendered and sexual citizenship through bodies of teachers and children in schools in India and Turkey.
