Douglas S. Ishii is an assistant professor in the Department of English, where he teaches classes in Asian American literature and culture, U.S. multiethnic literatures, queer of color critique, and cultural studies methods and theory. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland. He is currently completing his first book, Something Real: Asian American Arts Criticism and the Racialization of Sophistication, which examines interconnected genealogies of Asian American arts activism since the Asian American Movement of the 1960s and ‘70s through its diverging influences of grassroots antiracism and liberal diversity. He has published his article-length work in Camera Obscura: Media, Culture, Feminism, American Literature, and The Journal of Asian American Studies. His work has also been included in Techno-Orientalism: Imagining Asia in Speculative Fiction, History, and Media (Rutgers University Press, 2015); Global Asian American Popular Culture (NYU Press, 2016); The Oxford Encyclopedia of Asian American Literature & Culture (2019); Q&A: Voices from Queer Asian North America (Temple University Press, 2021); The Account: A Journal of Poetry, Prose, and Thought; and American Quarterly’s event reviews.
