C. R. Grimmer is a poet and scholar from Southeast Michigan's Metro-Detroit area. C. R. received their Ph.D. in Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Washington (UW) as well as their M.F.A. in Creative Writing and M.A. in English Literature at Portland State University (PSU). They are the author of The Lyme Letters, which won the Walt McDonald First Book Award from Texas Tech University Press. They are also the author of audio and print-based collaboration, O–(ezekiel’s wife), which features visual artwork by Colleen Burner and audio soundscapes produced by prior Simpson Center Fellow, Judy Twedt. You can find their individual poems in POETRY Magazine, FENCE Magazine, Drunken Boat, [PANK] Magazine, and related journals. Scholarly publications can be found in journals and edited collections such as The Comparatist. They have a background in non-profit project management through a literacy non-profit in Detroit, MI, and have taught at Portland State University, South Seattle Community College, and on the Seattle and Bothell UW campuses.
Across different disciplines and campuses, C. R.'s courses and publications examine intersections of gender, race, sexuality, and (dis)ability in poetry, pop culture, essay composition, and multimodal arts and scholarship. This background has informed their work as the (prior) Assistant Director of Digital Pedagogy and (current) Public Scholarship Project Director at the UW-Seattle in the Department of English. Recently, they have received fellowships from The Simpson Center for the Humanities with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, became a Jack Straw Artist Support Fellow, and produced The Lyme Letters with support from The Harlan Hahn Disability Studies Endowment. They also created and direct both the Dialogue Series at the UW in the Department of English ("Language, Literature, Culture") and their own project, The Poetry Vlog (TPV) (YouTube and Podcast Teaching and Scholarship Series).
