Chrystel Oloukoï is an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Washington. They hold a PhD in African and African American Studies from Harvard University, which concentrations in Social Anthropology, Critical Media Practice, and Women Gender and Sexuality. Their research and interests lie in the intersection of black studies, political economy, abolition geographies, film studies and queer theory.

Oloukoï is a 2026-2027 Society of Scholars fellow for their project Black Nocturnal: Ecologies of the Night in Lagos, which examines nighttime as a critical but ambivalent terrain of life from the 1880s to the present. Engaging wide-ranging methodologies including archival research, nocturnal diaries, sonic ethnography, digital and media analysis, film, and cartography, this book project explores the ways in which an ongoing colonial urbanism forced Black urban residents to draw their survival from subterranean nocturnal economies, while marking nighttime and the forms of living and social reproduction dependent on it as always already criminal. Black Nocturnal names the condemnation of the night as inextricable from a condemnation of blackness, of the ability to make lives in the interstices of enlightenment regimes of being and propriety.
