A Classroom-Centered Inquiry into Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Writing Praxis

This research group is studying the challenges that generative AI technologies such as large language models (LLMs) pose for the teaching of writing. We come from a variety of perspectives: teaching professors, assistant professors, program directors, W-course faculty, an instructional technology specialist, and a graduate student. Together, we aim to facilitate cross-disciplinary development of resources concerning writing pedagogy and LLMs, building a toolkit in the short-term for instructors in a wide variety of disciplines. Sensitive to the fast pace of technological change, we also seek to develop long-term, sustainable infrastructure and support networks to help grow UW as a hub for thoughtful pedagogies in the era of AI. Thus, this infrastructure will continue to assess writing in the context of AI but will also support ongoing inquiries for teachers and learners.
