Horn of Africa

In recognition of the significant presence and impact of Horn-heritage communities in the Pacific Northwest, the UW Horn of Africa Initiative promotes research and teaching on the East African region that includes the countries of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Djibouti. In the 2026-2027 academic year, the project aims to continue to develop the University of Washington’s status as a leader in the study of the Horn of Africa by bringing outstanding scholars and community members to engage with UW students, staff, and faculty. To this end, the Initiative will host a community-building event with local Ethiopian community-facing organizations and three lectures by professors working across the United States and Canada. These academic events will build upon the success of phase I of the Initiative, which took place from 2019-2020.
