Texts and Teachers

Texts and Teachers

Year of Funding:
Texts and Teachers

Texts and Teachers is an eleven-year-old educational outreach program that links university humanities faculty-taught humanities courses with high school classrooms, high school students and their teachers in order to study shared content and to learn similar analytical and writing skills.  It provides for ongoing curricular development and pedagogical collaboration among university literature departments and high school language arts programs, on the principle that meaningful pedagogical change is rarely a matter of one-time inventions or intermittent interventions.

Texts and Teachers involves high school teachers in designing the courses to be taught, making them partners in a shared educational project.  The program also promotes interaction between the college and high school classes: typically high school students visit the university campus once during a linked course, while university faculty visit the high school classroom multiple times.

In 2012 we will extend our collaboration to involve Seattle Pacific University, and launch a new course on visual and textual literacy, Literature and Film.
