Freedom with Violence

In his new book Freedom with Violence, Chandan Reddy (English) offers a new paradigm for understanding race, sexuality, and national citizenship, grounded in queer of color critique and critical ethnic studies.

Whereas contemporary neoliberal societies look to the nation-state to provide freedom from violence, Reddy argues that liberal modernity depends on systematic violence against peoples perceived as non-normative and irrational. With examples ranging from asylum law to the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, Reddy challenges the linking of freedom to rights and citizenship in order to cast modernity as that structure which actually authorizes state violence, rather than offering freedom from violence.
