UW Diversity Scholars Pilot Program
The new Diversity Requirement takes effect for undergraduate students entering the University of Washington Autumn Quarter 2014. Hundreds of courses have already been approved in support of that requirement. Much work in curriculum transformation and diversity pedagogies lies ahead.
To support that work and the faculty members who do it, the University of Washington will offer five Diversity Scholar positions that are funded through the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. This pilot program is housed in the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Diversity Scholars serve as resources for other faculty members in their respective disciplines to work on curriculum transformation and inclusive teaching. The Scholars will collaborate with faculty members who are adapting, developing, or reframing courses to align with the new requirement. They will also collaborate as a team to create and facilitate learning communities, workshops, and resource materials which assist faculty members in the development of diversity related teaching and learning.
Scholars meet with each other twice per quarter to exchange ideas, support each other’s work, and plan activities for Spring Quarter. These meetings include CTL instructional consultants, who can serve as resources for the Scholars while learning from them. Too, each scholar offers one faculty workshop Spring Quarter, with one follow-up consultation. The Scholars also contribute one or two blog posts, toolkits or other web resources to the Center for Teaching and Learning site.
Tenured or tenure- track full, associate and assistant professors as well as principal lecturers, senior lecturers and lecturers with three or five year appointments, are eligible to apply. Research faculty and visiting faculty will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Five faculty members will be selected based on their qualifications and expertise; they will represent a range of disciplines and the three UW campuses. One Scholar’s appointment will be at the UW Tacoma, one at the UW Bothell, and three at the Seattle campus.
Diversity Fellows will be paid $3,000 for two quarters of service with the initial funding to be provided by the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. The two quarters of service take place Winter 2014 and Spring 2014.
To apply for consideration as a Diversity Fellow, applicants should submit:
1. A letter of interest outlining experience in diversity research, inclusive teaching, and faculty development, and demonstrated ability to work in a team to develop resources and learning opportunities for faculty (2-page maximum).
2. A cover sheet with the following information: a) name(s), title, department; b) email address and phone number; c) campus mailing address (e.g. box number); and d) statement of availability for winter and spring 2014
3. The current syllabus for a course that illustrates the applicant’s diversity teaching practices.
