As Web & Communications Specialist, Chelsea Yates coordinates the Center’s multiple public interfaces in the form of print and e-communications, outreach, and public relations. She guides publicity strategies and collaborates with faculty and graduate students to help promote their scholarship. She also manages the Center’s communications team. A few of her recent projects include overseeing the redesign and implementation of the Center’s new Drupal website and the reinvention & digitization of the Center’s annual newsletter.
Chelsea has extensive experience in the museum sector. At the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City she served as Coordinator of the Photography curatorial department and assisted with exhibition coordination, catalogue research, educational programming, and donor relations. At the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, she oversaw, developed, and managed publicity efforts for a range of programs for adult audiences. Prior to joining the Simpson Center, Chelsea was responsible for member communications and events at Seattle’s Pacific Science Center.
Chelsea holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Nebraska and a master’s degree in American Studies and graduate certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Kansas. Her articles and essays have appeared in Kawsmouth, Women’s Studies, Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, and Journal of the History of Collections, and she is a contributing writer for the music website HearNebraska.org.
